If you’ve ever had a chance to visit the Outer Sunset Farmer’s Market or the Stonestown Farmer’s Market (among others), then you may have already heard of or tried Smokin’ D’s Barbecue, as they are out at these and other events all the time. Soon, however, you’ll be able to stop by their storefront on Irving Street, conveniently located in the “fun section” of Outer Irving.
If you’ve not yet tried out their food, you should really do so because it is great Texas-style barbecue, and they make a wonderful bao bun filled with brisket. It’s the perfect street food to eat while checking out the flea markets, because it tastes good while also not making a mess.
The new storefront will open sometime at the end of August, so be sure to follow Smokin’ D’s and find out the exact date. Note the art from local artist Nate1Design on the front!
This part of Irving past 19th has a lot of “fun” things all in one place ,and easily accessible by Muni’s N-Judah train and 7 bus. A quick survey of the block with Smokin’ D’s includes a lot of great places to keep the good times rolling. Right next to the future bbq joint is Pipeline Cannabis, which was one of the first cannabis retailers on the westside of SF.
This part of town is also home to Krispy Krunchy Chicken, located across the street which started in the seafood market, but ended up expanding into the space with the mochi donuts. Local writer Broke-Ass Stuart wrote about the virtues of Krispy Krunchy Chicken a while back, and although the Irving St. location may not have the late night entertainment of the South Van Ness location, they still make great chicken and chicken-related products.
No wonder they picked this part of Irving for last year’s “Night Market,” which by all accounts was a success:
I think it would be difficult to talk about Outer Irving without mentioning Tpumps, which from what I can tell is the most popular brand of boba drinks on Earth - the image above is from 2020 when in the middle of a global pandemic, people braved the outside world for Tpumps. Now THAT’s loyalty!
Same goes for Pineapple King, and Uncle Benny’s Donuts both of which are almost as popular, and sometimes I think the Pineapple King line compares well to the Tpumps line across the street.
All of this is accessible by the N Judah at the 19th Ave and 22nd Ave stops, and via the 7 Bus, where it stops in front of the Walgreen’s at 22nd and Irving. What a bargain!
Ah! I believe I had been to Guangdong Barbecue when I lived in this part of Outer Sunset. Nostalgia!
